Why was Jesus given bitter wine while he was on the cross? What was the significance of this? I have heard that it was to torment him more with the smell of vinegar. I have also heard that it was mixed with an herb and it was common to use as a painkiller back then.

There are several beliefs on this.

1.) They were doing it to taunt him with the smell of vinegar which is what you get when wine goes sour.

2.) It was mixed with myrrh and that mixture was commonly used as an opiate type pain killer.

He refused it either way. If you go by the first thought, it was more torment for him to endure by having that in his face.

The second idea follows the belief that Jesus wanted to endure the pain and torment to make the sacrifice whole. He did not want to take the easy way out.
