1.) Is there a specific phrase or picture that a brown scapular must have on it? I have seen plain crosses and more elaborate pictures and even writing on some.

2.) My current scapular is starting to fray on the edges. Can I cut that off or should I get a new one? What should i do with the trimmings or the worn scapular if replacement is needed?

3.) Does the color or material make a difference? I I have never been a fan of the cord that comes with them. Can I cut the cord off and put some better string, cord, or chain on it?

Not sure of the validity of it, but if you do change out the cord on it, make sure to get the clothing grade material. They do have the same material that can be used for crafts and such, but it is not as durable.

I on the other hand wear a 5-way scapular. It is Silver on a chain. I really can't stand the cloth ones, they tend to get dirty and choke me when I am active. They also carry the same blessings.

Not really sure, but I have heard that sacramentals such as the brown scapular need to be burned or buried if they are destroyed.

I have seen several versions, but they are all pretty much the same. I have seen different sizes too. I was at a conference one time and saw a lady wearing one that must have been 1 foot by 1 foot on both sides. Almost looked like it was supposed to be a sandwich board. Pretty cool conversation starter.

I have heard the same about burning or burying. In my opinion, it should be ok to trim it, as long as you don't trim it too much and then burn or bury the scraps.

I haven't seen any official documentation, but have been told that it is supposed to be 100% wool.

You might try a simple search on them to see different design. There are several books that describe it.

Here might be a good start Brown Scapular Search
