I met with a guy the other day who had a stern hatred for Catholics. We went round and round and eventually I won on all but one argument. Which I told him I would have to get back with him on. Idolatry: he claims that Catholics are Idolaters. He says we have our statues and icons and that we worship them.
I made the argument that we use those as a reminder, something to help us to focus on something while we pray. He still compares this to the Golden Calf. He says that we kiss the feet of statues, talk to them as if they hear and pray to saints.
My question is at what point does it go too far. I know there are some who mis-understand the faith and jump over the line while they think they are doing right. How do I answer his argument without just saying "Well, there are bad apples in every bunch."
