I was recently asked to be a sponsor for someone joining the church. What all does it entail? I don't feel that I am the best Catholic, but do know a lot. Should I accept? Should I talk them into choosing someone more versed in the faith?

You have been chosen for a reason. It is quite an honor to be chosen. It is a great experience. Not only are you their to help guide a new soul into communion with God, you are learning more yourself.

Your responsibilities may vary by church\RCIA program. The general idea is to be there for them to answer or discuss questions they may have, to support them and pray for them. You will need to attend the classes with them, and the masses. They will have several masses that are required attendance, otherwise you can go to any mass.

We usually go out to breakfast after the required masses. We try to get together once a week and go to lunch, and go over any questions, discuss the last class, their feelings, why they were so emotional at the last mass...

If you don't know much about the faith, you will get a lot out of it as well. Most cradle Catholics will find that while they grew up with it, they may have forgotten, or something just didn't mean as much to them. I admire converts, they in some cases have a better understanding of the faith than I do. They have to work for it, and don't take it for granted as much as most cradle Catholics do.

I hope you choose to join up, and to help guide this person.

God Bless
