We usually try to give something up during Lent. This is to mimic Christ's Journey in the desert. As far as I know it is a voluntary thing. Not required, but good practice.
It is up to you what to give up. Most people I know end up breaking the sacrifice within a few days, and treat it like a New Year's Resolution. It is supposed to be something hard to resist, as a constant reminder, yet not something that will kill you. With kids it is usually candy or tv. What you give up, might also be a moderation thing too. Say you smoke 2 packs a day, try to cut down to 1 pack, or maybe don't drink coke on odd days.
Say you choose chocolate or coke to give up, on one day of weakness you drink or eat some, maybe you just forgot about it, don't give up. That is, pick up where you left off. While it is not complete, by stopping the sacrifice at that point, you are giving in to temptation.
