While this is in relationship to my class, I also want to apply it to parenthood. Say I have a rowdy bunch of preschoolers, they fight or throw temper tantrums, almost even try to find things to break the rules.
Questions is, what is the best discipline for a 3 or 4 year old?

You know, you can have punishments that push for a better purpose.
My mother always made us do "I Love Yous" growing up. When my sister and I did something bad to each other we had to stop and say "I love you because..." three times and we had to come up with three reasons. That was always quite painful.
Another idea is to recite Bible Verses or the Ten Commandments and then have them explain why what they did was wrong. Maybe say a certain prayer. Something along those lines as a means to calm them down and refocus them on something good. Sometimes kids can get too excited about whatever happened on the play ground, and all you need to do is pull them aside for a moment and get them to refocus and think before they act. As time goes by they might eventually adopt this way of thinking and control themselves better.
There is always the norm, time out or losing a toy that can either help or in most cases just make them even more upset.
You might want to experiment though and see what works. I have heard mixed studies on disciplinary methodology. Some say to mix it up so they don't get used it rendering the punishment useless. While others say that consistency is the only way. If a child knows they will receive this punishment for this action, they will think about it before they do it.
Either way, good luck and God Bless,
